Think and Grow Rich is the playbook that countless millionaires and billionaires have used to achieve their success and learn how to lead a RICH life.
It ignited a flame of ambition, optimism and helped end the Great Depression!
My goal in this article is to give you an overview of this amazing book and give you my take on why it might work.
Think and Grow Rich The Movie
There is a new movie out that does an amazing job at summarizing the book. You can watch the trailer here.
While not the same as reading the full book, this movie is very inspiring and fun to watch.
Think and Grow Rich has created more wealth than all wealth hacks and coaches for the last 80 years combined.
Hill’s 13 principles of success are a timeless and evergreen concept. This material is as relevant now as it was in 1937.
- Sold Over 120 million copies worldwide
- TAGR is one of the 15 best-selling books of all time
- This book has been translated into more than 100 languages
- Ranked the 6th best-selling paperback books of all time
- Inspired millions of ordinary people to reach extraordinary achievements
The Author Napoleon Hill
The book was written (with much meticulous research and effort) by Napoleon Hill in 1937.
Napoleon Hill was only 26 years old when he met the highly successful Andrew Carnegie who was the wealthiest man on Earth at that time.
Hill asked Carnegie the secret of his success as part of an assignment.
Carnegie was quite the character and he gave Hill a very interesting response to a somewhat cliched question!
Carnegie told Hill that he would reveal the secrets to his huge success, only if Hill would devote twenty years of his life to learn about it!
Napoleon Hill agreed.
For the next twenty years, Andrew Carnegie helped him meet more than 500 billionaires and millionaires.
Those people included:
-Charles M. Schwab
After years of interviews and research, Finally, Napoleon Hill wrote it all up in the book “Think and Grow Rich.”
Think about the value of this…..learning everything that made the richest people in the world successful all in one book.
A book that you can buy for $9.99.
A book that has created more millionaires than any other work. So essential in that in most inner circles people don’t ask ‘have you read Think and Grow Rich’ but rather ‘When did you first read Think and Grow Rich’?
Think and Grow Rich Main Themes
The main theme of the book, as you might have guessed from the name, is “Thinking”.
The only difference between an ordinary life and an amazing life is the way we think.
- Rich doesn’t just mean money. It means having a rich life experience. Health. Relationships.
Here are the chapters in Think and Grow Rich.
- Chapter 1 – Thoughts Are Things
- Chapter 2 – Desire (not just a ‘want’ but an all consuming burning fire)
- Chapter 3 – Faith (helps you take chances, burn the ships, believe you can get there)
- Chapter 4 – Autosuggestion
- Chapter 5 – Specialized Knowledge (e.g. courses)
- Chapter 6 – Imagination (getting rid of limited thinking, if you can imagine it, you can get it)
- Chapter 7 – Organized Planning
- Chapter 8 – Decision (action)
- Chapter 9 – Persistence (Think Edison 10,000 attempts to get the light bulb working)
- Chapter 10 – Power of The Mastermind (surround yourself with people better than yourself)
- Chapter 11 – The Mystery of Sex Transmutation (weird chapter)
- Chapter 12 – The Subconscious Mind (break the inner autopilot!)
- Chapter 13 – The Brain
- Chapter 14 – The Sixth Sense
- Chapter 15 – The Six Ghosts of Fear (fear of failure, poverty, death etc.)
Now you might question – How can anyone get rich just by thinking?
Haven’t we heard so many stories about lazy day dreamers who think whole day and die in poverty?
Hasn’t this been the thing our parents warned us about?
Isn’t hard work and God gifted talent are the only requisites of success?
As hard as it will be to digest for you, everything that you knew until now about success is a myth.
After you read this book, your perception of life will change forever.
People do not get successful because of hard work. People get successful because of thinking correctly.
Is Think and Grow Rich a SCAM?
Having the word ‘Rich’ in any book title always has a certain population screaming ‘scam!’.
This book is not a get-rich-quick scam.
I’ve lost count of how many people I know that have read and followed the book only to find that it has completely turned their life around.
Interestingly there is a section in the book about this type of mindset…..
I can see why some people might be a little put off by some of the material in the book. Sentences like ‘Every thought produces a vibration. In addition, this intangible impulse can be transmuted into material reward’ don’t help.
Discussion of an ‘infinite intelligence’ doesn’t help either. The word ‘manifest’ also turns people off.
It seems like there is a solid scientific background that was perhaps not evident to Hill back in the early 1900’s.
Think and Grow Rich Neuroscience
Hill emphasizes that a ‘burning desire’ is the starting point of success. This is on par with having a definite purpose.
Your major definite purpose can be defined as the one goal that is most important to you at the moment.
Prefrontal Cortex Activation
Definite of purpose will help you achieve your goals because it stimulates the prefrontal cortex.
The prefrontal cortex is responsible for reasoning, problem solving, comprehension, impulse-control, creativity and perseverance. All of these qualities are crucial to achieving your goals.
The basic activity of this brain region is considered to be orchestration of thoughts and actions in accordance with internal goals. It will basically start looking for ways to make your dreams come true instead of looking for excuses.
So, having strong internal thoughts on what you want to achieve stimulates this area of the brain which then activates and helps you perform the crucial tasks for success.
Interestingly, mindfulness can also increase Prefrontal Cortex activity.
Reticular Activating System
The RAS is also the system that helps you sort through all thoughts and impressions going through your mind all the time keeping you from a burnout (shortcut), both consciously and subconsciously.
It works as the filter of everything that is passing through your mind which means both things that happen in real life OR just the thoughts in your mind (here we go again… the super importance of what we think…).
A good example is when you buy a new car. You start to see that same car EVERYWHERE. Why? Because of your RAS.
The number of identical cars on the road is still the same. But the information is more relevant to you now. So you see more of it.
When you think about something and really focus on it – opportunities will become more obvious to you. They are there regardless but unless they are relevant to you – your brain filters them out.
Focusing on your goals makes these opportunities relevant to you.
Think and Grow Rich helps with this because using positive affirmation, autosuggestion, goal setting etc. all influence your RAS to work in your favor.
The brain can’t differentiate something that is internally visualized from the real event. Studies have shown this to be an effective tool for athletes for example. An often cited study concerns the improvement of basketball players visualizing free throws.
Think and Grow Rich Review: Conclusions
This is a must-read book and you should check it out ASAP if you are looking to change your current life or situation. The book comes across as a bit ‘woo woo’ at times, but I hope I’ve shown why many of the techniques work via neuroscience.
Don’t wait, just buy it.
It will open doors in your life that you didn’t even know existed. The difference between an ordinary life and a life full of extraordinary fulfillment is the way we think.
Here is the new modernized movie that is much more enjoyable than the book in my opinion.
