I totally get it. I quit my career as a physicist to work online. There were some great parts of my job – like getting to conduct cutting edge scientific research. But, working for someone else just wasn’t going to make me happy. I was very driven in my job, but I wanted to be the one that decided when I would work, set my own hours and not be treated like a slave!
In 2014, I decided I was not going to put up with the conventional 9-5 job any longer. I wanted to be able to work less, earn more and live the life of my dreams. That sounds like a dream, right? Well I found a way to do it!

You Need a Side Hustle

A side hustle is something that you can start in your spare time to help you make some extra money. It is where everyone should start, before they actually quit their job to work online full-time.
The trick is to build a foundation for your business on the side while still maintaining full-time employment. You need to get ‘proof-of-principle’ that your chosen online business will support you and that it is something you are passionate about.

When I asked my friend Stephanie how to make money online and quit your job, she told me that proofreading and freelance writing are the two things that set her financially free. Stephanie preferred freelance writing because it is higher paid than proofreading.

I read an article this morning that claims there are only about 2000 virtual assistants world-wide. This is amazing to me because we are surrounded by friends that are virtual assistants!
Virtual assistants are people that help other online entrepreneurs with their day-to-day tasks. They work remotely from anywhere in the world and use the internet to provide services to their clients. So what do virtual assistants do?
Here is a short list of some of the more common jobs that virtual assistants do:

Leaving your job to become self-employed is a scary and significant step in your life – I know it was for me! The trick is to build multiple streams of income as side hustles before even thinking about leaving your job. We waited until we were making several thousand dollars a month with out side hustles and had about 3 months in savings before going full-time as online entrepreneurs.
The hardest part is making that first leap into self-employment. You just have to believe in yourself and take one step at a time. Everything usually works out and your online entrepreneurship career will as well!
